New York City's largest police union has shared its outrage over the release of a prisoner who was responsible for the first death of a female NYPD officer.

The Police Benevolent Association said the release of cop-killer Darryl Jeter 'is a blow to every cop who puts her life on the line to stop criminals from preying on innocent New Yorkers'.

Jeter shot and killed Officer Irma 'Fran' Lozada in 1984 after she and her partner chased him for allegedly stealing a subway rider's chain necklace while riding the L train through Brooklyn.

Lozada, who was 25 when she died, was the first female NYPD officer killed in the line of duty.

'Police Officer Lozada's sacrifice was a testament to the courage she shared with all New York City police officers, regardless of gender, race or creed,' PBA President Patrick Lynch told the New York Post on Sunday.

Jeter was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 32 and 1/2 years to life in prison. He was released on parole on December 7 after serving 36 years.

The convicted killer was on parole for a robbery charge when he fatally shot Lozada.

She was chasing him after he stole a chain from a straphanger on the L subway line in Brooklyn. She was alone at the time after having been separated from her partner.

Lozada's body was found hours later in a vacant lot amid tall weeds.

Jeter was sentenced before legislation was passed making life without parole the top sentencing option for cop killers.

The police union says his release is insult to officers everywhere and the organization will 'continue to urge Governor Hochul and the State Legislature to fix our broken parole system before another hero's sacrifice is dishonored.'

Lozada had served with the New York City Transit Police Department for four years, after working three years as an auxiliary police officer.
