Hi! I'm Elijah, I'm 12 but I'm turning 13 in 5 months. I'm kinda looking for an anime that i could watch, something that doesn't have too much fanservice or anything like that.

I can handle some fanservice, moderate violence, minor gore, swearing (as long as it doesn't go farther than the occasional f-word :P) and any amount of drug/alcohol reference

Here is a list of anime that I watched/currently watching that I enjoy

  • Sword Art Online (first and second season)
  • Durarara!
  • Gurren Laggan
  • One Punch Man
  • The Devil Is A Part Timer!
  • Kuromukuro
  • Puella Magi Madoka Magica
  • Death Note

Also it would be great if you could help me find some anime that i could watch with my 10 year old brother, he's kinda immature and i don't let him watch anything too sexual. I'm kinda like a miniature parent lol.
He's seen:

  • The first 3 episodes of SAO (up until that episode with Silica, episode 4 i think, i might be wrong tho)
  • The first episode of One Punch man. (And ep 2 until the part with the Mosquito creature thing)
  • The entirety of Madoka Magica (I skipped the op entirely, but i didn't skip that last monologue where due to plot points
  • The first ep of Durarara! (so far)
  • The first episode of Gurren Laggan (I explained to him that the show contained sexual content but he said lol no so i showed him the first episode)
  • Nearly all of Ouran Highschool Host Club
  • Most of Naruto

One last list, I kinda wanna start watching the following, so if some of you experienced anime watchers could tell me if these are appropriate that'd be great.

  • Neon Genesis Evangellion
  • Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions
  • Higurashi When They Cry (I know, a bit of a stretch, but a friend recommended it to me so yeah)
  • Lucky Star (Seen the first ep, Idk if it's worth watching the rest)
  • Nichijou (I've seen clips on youtube, I don't really know)
  • KonoSuba
  • Naruto Shippuden And Boruto (I don't want fillers >,<
  • Attack On Titan (ive seen part of the first episode, Again, I don't know)
  • Re:Zero
  • Kill La Kill (Again, a bit of a stretch, a friend recommended it to me. as long as it's fanservice isn't graphic it's fine)

that's all, thanks to anyone that takes time out of their day to read this wall of text xD

edit: i watched a few eps of AOT last night, couldn't help myself >.<

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni i think is good but it can get pretty gorey at times..
Also Nichijou and Lucky Star in my opinion if you dont enjoy the first episode might as well drop it.

Also here's some recommendations you might like;
Steins;Gate
Fullmetal Alchemist
Assassination Classroom
My Hero Academia
Magic Kaito 1412

If you liked Madoka you might enjoy Gakkougurashi! (School-Live!) and Selector Infected WIXOSS. If your brother could handle Madoka he can probably watch them as well, though it depends on how you feel about an incestuous subplot in the latter. (It doesn't get explicit.)

Neon Genesis Evangelion constantly toes the line, but is overall probably fine for your age. The old releases were rated for 12+ if I remember correctly.

Higurashi goes significantly beyond "minor gore" - wait a few years.

Kill la Kill doesn't have any real "graphic" fanservice (as in, no nipples, explicit sex, genital detail, etc.) but there's a lot of it. Another borderline. Definitely not for your brother.

Hi!
I think you should watch Katekyo Hitman Reborn! It's devoid of any fanservice and the action is pretty much bloodless, the first 20 episodes are mostly comedy and character introduction arcs though.

I think it would be safe to watch it with your little brother too. ^^

Other anime to consider:

Tegamibachi,
don't know if it can really be countend as fanservice, the character "Niche" when the MC first meets her, he realizes she doesn't wear any underware, so he gives her a pair of his own boxer shorts, no nudity is shown, only implied, it's a running gag that the pair of large underware she got from him is proof of their trust and whenever she get's upset with him she discards them, nothing is ever shown though. It's worth noting that Niche looks like a child.
An adult woman character appears naked but no detailed nudity. she covers up in a sort of bikini after the MC asks her to. The battles are mostly all bloodless.
I know it might sound bad but it really isn't!

D.Gray-man, no real fanservice as far as i remember, but Lenalee wears a mini skirt all the time,Battles are relatively bloodless from what i remember except in the sequel D.Gray-man Hallow but that one is fairly gory and better left for when you're older.

Ao no Exorcist, no real fanservice, battles don't have any gore and probably no blood either if i remember right.

Noragami, Battles don't have any blood or gore at all, there's some fanservice though, like some quick panty flashes, Bishamon's outfit is fairly revealing, we can also see her naked in the water, but nothing detailed, Hiyori let's Yukine sleep in the same bed as her thinking he's much younger and this causes some impure thoughs(nothing is shown though)

I tried to list any content that i remember as fanservice/violence so you can make the decision for yourself if you want to watch them or not.

You should probably try watching Fullmetal Alchemist. It's classic and since you have a sibling you will enjoy the whole brothers bonding thing. Othe good animes with moderate violence and not annoying fan service are Akatsuki no Yona, Noragami, Shinsekai Yori. You can also try sports anime (I don't know if you're interested) such as Haikyuu and Kuroko no Basket.

About the ones you think of watching, Naruto and Attack on Titan are great ideas. But have in mind that AoT can get really violent with graphic details. Now about Neon Genesis Evangelion, you should knwo before deciding to start this one, that it's not a simple mecha/action anime. Not at all to be honest. It deals with many psychological issues and is quite confusing if you aim for just a mecha plotline.

Hope I helped.

|| It is my perception that a true friend never relies on another's dream. A person with the potential to be my true friend must be able to find his own reason for life without my help. And he should put his heart and soul into protecting his dream. He would never hesitate to fight for his dream, even against me. For me, a true friend is one who stands equal to me in all respects. ||

Space Battleship Yamato 2199
No swearing or fanservice (though the women wear form-fitting uniforms so call it minor fanservice). Lots of action-packed space battles, explosions, beam weapons and missiles flying around ie. something a 10 yr old would appreciate. Several of the crew would appeal to young boys as role models: the mc Kodai and his best bud Shima, fighter jock Saburou, father figure Okita, etc.

Rurouni Kenshin
The 100+ episode TV series. Graphics a bit dated now but everything in this show is geared to adolescents (boy or girl for that matter). No swearing or fanservice, Kenshin uses a reverse-blade sword (hits his opponent with the blunt side) so he never kills. Plenty of shounen-type baddies as well as several side-kicks who are introduced in the first few episodes.

DO NOT WATCH the prequel until your brother is much older and even for yourself it's rather gory and disturbing right the start (the most disturbing scene is in the first few minutes but there are more scattered throughout). The prequel was produced for an older audience and details how he got his nickname (basically killing people when he worked as an assassin for one of the sides in the Japanese civil war) and his X shaped scar.

would it be ok if i watched KLK by myself?

I neglected to mention in the thread that i've seen the first 3 episodes of InuYasha, and it's pretty good, a bit dated, but it's something fresh compared to what I watch on the norm.

I've seen the first minute or so of Magi: Adventures of Sinbad (The netflix original). Does that count? xD

I've REALLY been trying to avoid any kind of Dragon Ball, mostly because I'd have to watch ALL of the show, along with DBZ, and DBZ Kai and whatever other series there is, plus stay up to date on DBS, but i'll try to get into it

I've seen good things about Log Horizon. Isn't it like one of those fantasy Anime like SAO or KonoSuba?

Also I've seen Most of the Pokemon Cartoons, and like 3 of the Gen 5 movies. It's a bit childish though.

I watched most of Digimon (Seasons 1-3 and Fusion). Again, it's a bit childish for me.

I'll try Chunibyo and Spirited Away, as well as Dragon ball and Log horizon, thanks c:

Looking at the list you gave:

Lucky Star - its a good anime, though might not be for everyone, still comedic at times.

Higurashi - I do not recommend watching that now, its is pretty gory but also painful at times (hard to explain), maybe when you are 16+ for the full experience :)

Konosuba - fan service and some mature jokes although still a great comedy and fun to watch, really depends on how much fan service you can handle (edit: my sig is from there so you might know what its like)

Naruto shippuden - Watch it but skip fillers and then head straight to boruto after, definitely something i'll be looking back at when im older

Attack on titan - also a little gory but if you're up for some good action its great too.

Re:zero - good anime aswell, would recommend to you, maybe a bit much at times too like AoT.

As for things I'd recommend:

Definitely check out Hunter x hunter(2011), My Hero Academia, Haikyuu, Code geass and Bakuman.

My first strong recommendation for a series to watch with your brother is Uchuu Kyoudai ("Space Brothers") about two brothers who decide as kids to become astronauts. All 99 episodes are available on Crunchyroll.

Next are two fantasy shows produced by the NHK for kids your age:
Seirei no Moribito
Kemono no Sou-ja Erin

And some science-fiction shows with kids as the main characters
Dennou Coil
Noein
Angelic Layer

Noein has some material on quantum mechanics that might be a bit over your heads, but there are decent explanations, and all you really need to know is the concept of "parallel universes."

If you like science, you should give Time Travel Shoujo a try. The heroine is about your age and travels through time meeting famous scientists and inventors like Michael Faraday and Benjamin Franklin. It streams on Funimation.

If you want a good show about sports, I strongly recommend Cross Game. It uses baseball to drive a deeper story about family, love, and loss. It's only available illegally these days in the West, I'm afraid, so you're on your own.

Hikaru no Go follows a boy of about ten who becomes inhabited by the spirit of an ancient Go master. Under Sai's guidance, Hikaru begins a life devoted to Go. Streams at Viz. You'll be surprised at how dramatically they portray the games. The first few minutes of this clip show a match between Hikaru and the boy who will become his rival, Touya. Hikaru has never played Go before so the ghost master Sai is playing through him. Touya is a Go prodigy.

Here are a few other shows that might be of interest:
Chi's Sweet Home
Suisei no Gargantia (some mild fanservice)
Mahou Shoujotai Arusu
Nijuu Mensou no Musume
AKB0048
Tsuritama
Akagami no Shirayuki-hime ("Snow White with the Red Hair")
Flying Witch
Rocket Girls
Nejimaki Seirei Senki: Tenkyou no Alderamin
Arslan Senki
Rokka no Yuusha (a couple of skimpy outfits)

Kill la Kill is one of my favorite shows of the past few years, but it has many layers of meaning. It looks like an over-the-top comedy with fighting and fanservice, but it's really a story about the nature of fascism. The creators make this point in the opening scene which takes place in a history class discussing Nazism. I'd probably say it's a show you might wait on for a year or two and your brother a bit longer.

Konosuba, on the other hand, is something you can watch now. It's funnier if you've played Japanese role-playing games like the Final Fantasy series since some of Konosuba's humor parodies JRPG memes. The girls do have skimpy costumes (a running controversy on the web is whether Aqua "goes commando"), but otherwise it's not that sexually explicit. It's also pretty funny. Might be borderline for your brother.

I stopped watching Lucky*Star after the first, rather boring episode about chocolate coronets. I came back to it later on and enjoyed it, but I'd watch other things ahead of it. It has a lot of in-jokes and material that targets Japanese anime fans. Hibike! Euphonium, also by Kyoto Animation, is a more serious but much better show than Lucky*Star. Someday you can watch Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu followed Lucky*Star, but I wouldn't make them a priority.

Death note isn't as violent as people say (at least from what i can tell, coming from somebody that's on like episode 5)

OPM is bloody, but not really overly violent, similarly to Death Note, I'm on about episode 4 or 5, but it's not gory and it's violent in a humorous way (imo)

Though I can't help but agree in the case of AOT, but dismemberment isn't anything i can't handle, it's a bit disturbing however.

You guys would definitely enjoy My Hero Academia. Almost no fanservice, with the exception of Yaoyorozo's suit. But even then it's just fine.

Also, @mariou_shannon, where is that girl in your forum pic from?

imho you're too young for Higurashi, Evangelion, Konosuba and Kill la kill
you're also too young for AoTitan and Death Note, One Punch Man, but you've already watched that so what can you do...

for your brother I would say Puzzle and Dragon Cross and Deltora Quest

Mate, if he's watched the devil is a part timer he is definitely old enough for konosuba.

Let the ma- i mean boy watch what he wants.

For sure, it's just the kid already can't tell OPM is violent, late-night anime bs isn't meant for pre-teens, if he can learn to be more reserved then it'll be great, especially in how he'll influence his brother.

That was meant as a joke, but to be fair, 90% of shounen is violent and that genre is aimed at pre-teens/teens

But yeah, Ecchi and suggestive stuff? best stay away till you're older :P

It's from FLCL! :)

I've REALLY been trying to avoid any kind of Dragon Ball, mostly because I'd have to watch ALL of the show, along with DBZ, and DBZ Kai and whatever other series there is, plus stay up to date on DBS, but i'll try to get into it

That's not true. You can skip the original Dragon Ball anime, as it's fairly dated and is somewhat more fanservice oriented in places. You can start with Dragon Ball Z, which is the older, original version and still understand most of it. I began watching anime when I was 12 with DBZ and I loved it. It's a bit violent, especially the earlier parts, but not anything a 12 year couldn't handle.
If the slow pacing and number of episodes of DBZ is too much, you can instead go for DBKai, which is like the newer, remastered version of DBZ which cuts out all of the filler stuff. Just don't watch both Z and Kai, as they're the same thing otherwise.
I wouldn't really recommend watching DBSuper as it just doesn't hold up as well as Z/Kai, but a 12 year old might just enjoy it. Again, I don't think it's really necessary have watched any of the previous Dragon Ball anime to understand most of what is happening in DBSuper, but there are quite some throwbacks and references to older material, so having watched at least Z/Kai would be a plus.

It's not like it isn't violent, of course it is, the thing is that i've seen worse on youtube and such. I've seen the first episode of this (non-anime) black comedy tv show called "Happy Tree Friends". Google it and you'll know what i mean. >.<

Okay, Thanks for the clarification. I'd like to watch the show because i have uncles and stuff that watched Dragon Ball when they were younger. My dad watched it too, so i'd like to poke at it and try to make him laugh.

Accel World's that anime that takes place in the SAO universe right?

If my little brother finds out i was watching Little Witch Academia he'll take the chance to 1-up me because just the other day he was saying we should watch the 30 minute long short film because he heard that adults watch it, and i said no xDDDD. I'll try to watch it.

Neon Genesis Evangelion-

Just because it is "appropriate for 13 year olds"... doesn't mean it should be watched by 13 year olds kind of question. I would say... Wait until you are 14. Watch then. I watched it when I was pretty young... and the only reason why I was understanding any part of it was because I was already a depressed child who felt her parents did not love her. Unless this is you, I would say, hold off on this one until high school.

It is an anime of intense psychological emotion.... with an ending that is hard to understand really unless you are empathetic to the protagonist. Despite being more violent, Attack on Titan is easier for kids to understand.

My brother who is 13 watches Cowboy Bebop. He loves it. I would suggest also FLCL to watch with your brother. Digimon though is my favorite at 11.

Okay, thanks!

I think i can empathize with characters really well. I'll get incredibly emotional after the death of a character, like in Attack on titan when

I nearly cried, I also couldn't help but cry at the end of both Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the 3rd Movie.

Not what I am talking about. Death is easy to empathize with... Mental illness is not.

Niche anime but 5tou ni naritai. It's about a grade schooler girl with a serious limp still going through recovery and fighting like a boss. It's family friendly and heart warming.

Honestly, give “Gakuen Babysitters” a try. Watch the entire first episode and you will not regret it. It is a very unconventional recommendation but I think you’ll like it especially since it is not violent.
